November 1998 Newsletter.
The signs of computer technology are now unmistakable. More and more, teachers and
administrators need to be computer users. Memos from consultants and superintendents
are now being sent via e-mail. Report cards have gone electronic and many teachers this
weekend are installing them from a CD ROM on to their computers at home.
With any
new changes there are tensions and frustrations, especially when the technology doesn't
work as it's supposed to work. Karen Ellis,
(her site THE AMERICAN VIRGINISLANDS is reviewed below) sent these words of advice to help anyone dealing with this:"Remember when you are about to teach about technology, and your class has
that "deer caught in the headlights" expression in their eyes, remember....
"Come to the edge," he said.
They said, "We are afraid."
"Come to the edge," he said.
They came.
He pushed them...
and they flew."
Guillaume Appollinaire
Thank you Karen for those words. They sure have come in handy.

LETS'S GO PLAY! LYCOS CYBERSURFARI '98
Although registration began on October 20 for CyberSufari, you can still sign up any
time until the end of the contest--November 20. This treasure hunt lasts one month and
is open to individuals and/or K-12 school teams (these teams consist of 2-5 students).
You can also register at home any time until the end of the project. I really enjoy doing
this project.
It gives students an opportuity to use an Internet browser for a clear
purpose; practice in using their e-mail address; practicing team cooperation and developing
their reading and thinking skills. Some of those clues aren’t easy, but with some re-reading
and digging, can get students the answer.
The sites in themselves are well worth checking out, and bookmarking!

curriculum design, distance learning, search tools, and describes a handbook for
integrating the Internet, multimedia, video, books, television and other media into school
curriculums, following systematic approaches to the design and conduct of instruction.

VOLCANOES ONLINE
Volcanoes Online is a web site designed to educate students about volcanoes; more
specifically, what a volcano is, how they are formed, and how eruptions effect us all.
Visitors may test their knowledge of volcanoes with online games and multiple-choice
quizzes. Questions come from a comprehensive guide covering many aspects of
volcanoes, anywhere from plate tectonics to destructive eruptions of the past. The site
also includes a searchable database of volcanoes. The database has a lot of information
including pictures, location, dimensions, volcanic activity, and other features. Links to
other volcano sites, list of book titles, magazine articles, and more resources are listed for
further research. By students, for students and educators.
