October 1998
Newsletter.
Most of Canada has already experienced a frost except for
Southern Ontario. To make up for this, we experienced an earthquake,
measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale at its epicentre which originated just
on the other side of Lake Erie along the Ohio-Pennsylvania border just
before 4 p.m.
The last earthquake through this area was way back in 1986,
so it came as quite the surprise for most of us!

LETS'S GO PLAY! LYCOS CYBERSURFARI '98
My grades 6, 7&8 students have really enjoyed this world wide scavenger
hunt. This treasure hunt lasts one month and is open to individuals and/or K-12 school
teams (these teams consist of 2-5 students). You can also register at home any time
until the end of the project. I really enjoy doing this project. It gives students an
opportuity to use an Internet browser for a clear purpose; practice in using their e-mail address;
practicing team cooperation and developing their reading and thinking skills.
Some of those
clues aren’t easy, but with some re-reading and digging, can get students the answer.
The fourth annual CyberSurfari on October 20th, 1998 at 3:00 PM Eastern
Time.
The 100destination sites, or outposts, are pre-screened for content and
eductional value... therefore, Lycos CyberSurfari '98 is a fantastic way
for teachers and students to SAFELY search the Internet and learn about
the vast resources available to them through this growing media..

WHY IS MONA LISA SMILING?
This interdisciplinary inquiry explores the mystery behind the smile, and
features original
Da Vinci music, an interactive quiz, and a dozen Da Vinci diversions. This
site was
created as a result of a collaboration between high school students in
Borlange Sweden
and The Bronx. Visit the site and sign the guestbook with your feedback.
Your comments
would be inspirational to Stephen Feld's inner city multiethnic students
who managed to
create this project in a classroom containing 8088 machines and a single
telephone line to
the Internet.
