February 1999 Newsletter.
I'd like to extend a great big thank you to Karen Ellis (whose site THE AMERICAN
VIRGIN ISLANDS http://www.angelfire.com/pa/guavaberrybooks/usvi.html was reviewed
in the November 1998 Busy Educator's Newsletter). I received a request from an
elementary art teacher needing projects about Africa. The class is studying Black History
Month. Karen immediately helped out by sending great sites, and posting the request on
her list DUC Diversity University Collaboratory. Thank you Karen.

THE WATERSHED GAME, presented by Bell LIVE!
http://www.umn.edu/bellmuse/mnideals/watershed/watershed.html
Here's a brief summary of each:
ArtEdventure! Color Theory vs. Dr. Gray and his Dechromatizer" pits you against
a villain who drains the color from fine art. Learn about color theory to restore the
paintings. Crack color puzzles to foil Dr. Gray. This is our most fully-developed
adventure to date and includes a glossary, artist biographies, hands-on art activities, and a
complete lesson plan tied to the National Visual Arts Standards. (Fourth grade to adult)
"The Watershed Game," presented by Bell LIVE! Only one percent of all water on
earth is freshwater! Many things happen in a watershed that affect the quality of the water
we rely upon. Examine the issues in each area of the watershed, then see the impacts of
your choices! (Fifth grade to adult)
Bell LIVE! is a science distance learning program produced by the Bell Museum of
Natural History in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As a subscription-based distance learning
program, most of its materials are available only to participating schools. The Watershed
Game, however, is freely accessible to everyone, so enjoy it!

MUSIC NOTES
http://library.advanced.org/15413
Music Notes: An Interactive Online Musical Experience is an informative and
educational webpage. It was developed by three high school students from Lakeland
HS in New York for the 1998 ThinkQuest Competition.
Music Notes is an informative and educational webpage. It is designed to teach people
about music using the internet style of learning. There are five mainsections to the page:
music theory, history, styles, instruments, and professions. In addition there is a
comprehensive glossary, search engine, message board, guestbook and interactive games.

MAGIC SQUARES, MAGIC STARS AND OTHER NUMBER PATTERNS
http://www.geocities.com/~harveyh
This site illustrates the patterns that can be formed with numbers. It consists of three
sections: Magic Squares, Magic Stars, and Other Number Patterns. The section dealing
with magic stars is almost all original work. This site should be of interest to math teachers,
students, and recreational mathematics hobbyists.

GLOBAL HEROES
HYPERLINK "http://www.globalheroes.com/"http://www.globalheroes.com.
Developed for school and family use, Global Heroes is a place to meet inspiring Canadians
who are truly making a difference around the world. Along the way, students learn about
global environmental, health and economic issues and how they affect our lives in Canada.
Interactive scenarios, games and quizzes, audio interviews and links to the World Wide Web
attract young Canadians to explore the work of unsung heroes.
Comprising over one hundred pages in English and French, the site is divided into secondary
and elementary school levels. There is also a well-equipped "Virtual Staff Room" for teachers
where they can find ready-made lesson plans, ideas and additional resources.

PETER DE JAGER AND PANDORA'S BOX
http://civilliberty.miningco.com/library/weekly/aa012999.htm
Once Pandora's box is opened, how do you close it? Cyberguru Peter de Jager (who was
profiled in the January 1999 Busy Educator's Newsletter) was among the first to sound the
alarm about Y2K. These days, he's worried about the people who listened -- including,
maybe, Mining Company's Civil Liberties Guide J.D. Tuccille. Read a provocative exchange.

TEACHING TIP
by Nancy L. Brown
Thank you to Nancy L. Brown for submitting the following Teaching Tip:
Teachers get really frustrated with upper grades when they don't know who has submitted
a paper and who hasn't. I bought hanging shoe bags with see-thru pockets, labeled with
students' names (stickers) and it works great. You can remind the students to submit a paper
they may have forgotten about.
