January 1999
Newsletter.
Let me wish all of you a Happy New Year for 1999:
"May the road rise to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
The sunshine warm on your face
The rain fall soft upon your fields
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand."
In this special issue, I'm going to share my recent visits with two
remarkable people who
have done much in their respective careers and continue to contribute
their valuable
talents for the good of eduacators everywhere. I had the great
opportunity to meet
Ron Morrish, author of "Secrets of Discipline 12 Keys for raising
responsible children"
and Peter de Jager, well known speaker of the Y2K (Year 2000) computer
problem.

RON MORRISH

Ron Morrish, author of "Secrets of Discipline 12 Keys for raising
responsible children"
has been an educator and behaviour specialist since 1972. His
workshops and
presentations have helped countless parents and teachers improve their
skills for raising
responsible children.
Ron starts out with a very simple question: What has happened to
discipline? Could
television and the movies have such a negative impact on our children?
Many people think so. Others believe that social issues are to blame,
including poverty, abuse and the
breakdown of the family unit. Research says that every one of these
concerns plays a
significant role. That's not a surprise.
The only real surprise, according to Morrish, is that no one is
investigating the most obvious
source of problems. Many of the problems with discipline lie within
discipline itself. Many
of the strategies that we presently use to raise our children will not
give us the kind of
children we want.
I visited with Ron in his home for over 3 hours. While there, his 6
year old daughter kept
peeking through the doorway to see who her dad was talking to. Ron
invited her into the
room and introduced us. She then sat on his lap, and listened
attentively as we both
continued our conversation. There firsthand, I saw that Ron's approach
to discipline
really works. He is one speaker and author who "walks his talk".

Peter de Jager is another person who "walks his talk". I first met
Peter, long before the
Year 2000 problem became well known and before either of us had
Internet e-mail
accounts! Seems hard to believe. In March 1993, Peter organized a
free educational
conference for educators in Toronto. It was at that conference that I
first learned about the
potential of computers in education. Up until then, I had been used to
using computers
such as the PET 4016 and Commodore 64 with limited success.
Peter's
conference opened
up a whole new world for me and others in the field of educational
computing.
After the conference, Peter encouraged me with snail mail, then later
through e-mail with my
efforts to learn more about the computer. (At the time, I had no idea
what a C:/ was or how
to copy a file on to a floppy disk. Many times at school, I'd phone my
wife, the computer
programmer in the family, to talk me through the steps I needed to
follow to make my 286
to work! As you can see, she's been an excellent teacher!)
In December, I finally had the opportunity to meet up with him and his
lovely wife Antoinette
in their country home just north of Toronto. My wife and I had a great
lunch and spent
a wonderful afternoon talking about everything from the Y2K problem,
raising kids, our
educational system to trifle and tiramisu recipes.
For more information on the Y2K problem, Peter recommends reading the
January 1999
issue of Vanity Fair for a good historical background to the problem
and going to his site:

MY GOAL FOR THE NEW YEAR 1999
At the beginning of the school year, I teach students the importance of
setting goals.
The new year is a wonderful opportunity to reinforce goal setting (and
reinforce some of
your classroom goals and expectations.)
My goal for 1999 is to do more public speaking on the topic of
motivating educators,
and integrating the computer and the Internet into the curriculum. If
you or anyone you know would like to have me as a speaker/presenter, please e-mail me at marjan@glavac.com
I really appreciate your support.
