June 1999 Newsletter.

Here in the Northern Hemisphere, school is quickly ending for us. End of
school years often see a lot changes. I am transferring to W. Sherwood Fox
school as a grade 5 Language Arts, Social Studies and French teacher after teaching 5 years at Bonaventure Meadows. I will also be involved in computer site duties. If anyone has any great ideas and strategies to teach Language Arts and Social Studies (Ancient Civilizations and Aspects of Government in Canada) I'd really appreciate it.

I hope all your year end activities have gone well. All the best for a
great summer. If you have any good news to share with your colleagues, please e-mail

ONTARIANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ODA) COMMITTEE
http://www.indie.ca/oda/
Here's a site that Cathy Linderoos (retired special education teacher,
person with MS and volunteer ODA Committee member) especially likes!
It's the website from the Ontarians with Disabilities Act (ODA) Committee -
a non-partisan coalition of some 80 disability organizations and many more individuals in Ontario Canada. It is especially relevant to this June issue of the newsletter because of the June 3rd Ontario Election, and also because National Access Awareness Week is May 31st to June 6th .

Cathy recommends the site be used in secondary school political science or
media studies classes, but also for teachers' personal use. Why? In this case the old saying really applies - "the medium is the message" - you'll have to check out the site to decide why this is so applicable. (Thank you Cathy!)

EDUCATIONAL GAME REVIEWS BLURT
http://www.patchproducts.com
This game was first opened last month during my daughter's 10th birthday
party. It was an instant hit! Fun, challenging and fast-paced, BLURT occupied the girls for almost the entire party. Designed for ages 10 to adult, and playable with 3 to 12 players, BLURT also includes a junior version for ages 7 to 9. If you or your students can answer the following questions, you'll love the game: A period of one hundred years; a very small wave; a male duck (century, ripple, drake).
BLURT's suggested retail price is $30.00 US. $34.95 CAN. Available from
Toys 'R' Us, Store of Knowledge http://www.etoys.com or Super Duper School Supply (800) 277-8737.

KUBA
http://www.patchproducts.com
All it takes is five minutes of your time to learn the rules of Kuba, and
you're all set to enjoy a great game of strategy. Although recommended for 10 year olds to adults, my 6 year old was instantly taken with the game. He and my 10 year old daughter played game after enjoyable game, before dad finally found out what the excitement was all about. Kuba is a game of skill and strategy. The object of the game is to push seven neutral red marbles or all of your opponent's mables off the game board. You can only push your own marbles and no "jumping" is allowed. The action is fast paced and if you're using the wrong strategy, the game can be over in minutes. And that's the big appeal of the game. If you make a mistake and lose big, the game is over in minutes and you can begin another one. Unlike some games that can go on for hours, this game is ideal for children to learn
strategy and learn from their mistakes without getting frustrated. Kuba's suggested retail price is $19.99 US. Available from http://www.patchproducts.com
or http://www.turnoffthetv.com
