August 2000 Newsletter

A FREE newsletter edited by teacher, speaker and author
Marjan Glavac.   http://www.thebusyeducator.com/
Civic Holiday August 7
Bank Holiday (UK) August 28

Summer is a time to reconnect.  The days have been taken up watching
Collin and Vanessa's soccer games, (her first year--loves it); taking the
kids swimming at the community pool, where I invariably run into my
own kids (though many don't recognize me because of the "writer's"
beard I'm growing!); getting caught up with my son's interests--Pokemon
(we watch the shows together--now I understand what it's all about) and
Vanessa is my source for any Harry Potter questions--she's read all the
books; watching our favourite TV show as a family--Survivor.  Collin
thinks Richard is going to win.  Or it might be Rudy.
The book The Busy Educator's Guide To The World Wide Web 2nd
Edition is finished. (There will be an exclusive offer to readers of the
newsletter next week).

All the best to you this summer as you reconnect with your family and
loved ones.

CLASSROOM TEACHER'S EMERGENCY LESSON PLANS
John Philips
http://jjohnnypress.com
These emergency lesson plans come from John Philips new book "Jivin
Johnny's Classroom Teacher's Emergency Lesson Plans for elementary
and high schools."  The book contains over 90 student centered lessons and
projects to help you survive--while your students learn!  Here are two
of them:

1.  FIREBALL
You've invented a new sport called 'Fireball'.
 1. Explain how the game is played.
 2. Make a list of rules necessary to play the game correctly.
 3. Name 4 teams in our new Fireball league and describe the
strengths and weaknesses of each team.
To popularize the sport, or to promote the league's first championship
battle, create a poster design, a 1 page magazine ad, a T-shirt design, a
bumper sticker and a series of 6 buttons.
Write a 30 second radio ad to promote the sport or the championship game.
Write a shooting script for a 30 second TV spot to promote the sport or the
championship game.
2.  $1 MILLION GRANT
Your school has been given a special $1 million grant.  There are no strings
attached, except that the money must be spent within a year on things for the
school.  What would you spend it on?  Divide it up to show exactly where
you're spending it.  When done, share your ideas with the class.
