July 2000 Newsletter

A FREE newsletter edited by teacher, speaker and author
Marjan Glavac.   http://www.thebusyeducator.com/

A Happy Canada Day to Canadians everywhere! (July 1)
A Happy Independence Day to Americans everywhere! (July 4)

The time capsules that students made way back in September were handed
back the last week of June; an election simulation we had been working on
for the entire month of June culminated in voting, publicly counting the
votes, declaring a winner and hearing concession and victory speeches
from the participants; the video of the entire year's highlights was shown;
presents exchanged, a party held, report cards handed out and tears held
back. So ended another year of teaching and a great year with grade 5 students.
I  want to thank all of you for subscribing to this FREE newsletter.  This is the
second year anniversary of  The Busy Educator's Newsletter.  There are now
2274  subscribers and growing!  Thank you very much for all your support.
Wishing all my fellow Canadians a happy Canada Day and all my American
colleagues and friends to the south a happy Independence Day!

TIM'S TEACHER TIP
Tim Bedley
http://www.eleMENTOR.com
In order to maintain standards in the classroom, try reminding the students
that the standard is still being enforced.  Many teachers say nothing when
everyone in class is following a rule.  "I told them once.  They shouldn't
need to be told again!"  The problem is that some students my begin to
think, "Hmmm, I wonder if my teacher was really serious about not talking.
No one has gotten in trouble for talking yet."  Because kids need to be
set up for success, when everyone is following a rule, even for just 2
minutes, give positive feedback and reset your standard.  For example,
"Boy, everyone sure is doing a great job working without talking to their
neighbors right now.  Keep it up.  And don't forget that I will ask you to
pull a card if you decide to talk to your neighbor instead of doing your math."

scramble, and matching.  All have a fun, colorful, drag'n'drop interface.

your students.  Creating a puzzle is as simple as filling in a form.  These
puzzles are great for practicing spelling, learning new vocabulary, and
many other learning activities.  List your puzzles on the Worddragon
server for others to use, or purchase a copy of the applets for your own
computer.
