July 2001 Newsletter

A FREE newsletter edited by teacher, speaker and author Marjan Glavac.   http://www.thebusyeducator.com/

A Happy Canada Day to Canadians everywhere! July 1
A Happy Independence Day to Americans everywhere! July 4
Ocean Day (Japan) July 20

Last year at this time, I was busy working on The Busy Educator's Guide To The World Wide Web 2ND Edition.  I had no idea that I would be spending the entire summer on the project.  This summer, I promised my wife and children that it would be a relaxing summer -- no marathon writing.  So, to keep my promise, as soon as school was over, we headed off to Ottawa, the capital of Canada for Canada Day celebrations on July 1.  After a few days in Ottawa, we headed to the town of Lindsay Ontario where I started teaching 19 years ago.  After seeing some friends, it was off to another small town to catch up with a dear old friend and take the kids fishing for perch, bass and sunfish.  All in all, a very relaxing week.  I hope all of you are enjoying your summer holidays as well.

I  want to thank all of you for subscribing to this FREE newsletter.  This is the third year anniversary of  The Busy Educator's Newsletter.  There are now 2855  subscribers and growing!  Thank you very much for all your support for the newsletter and The Busy Educator's Guide To The World Wide Web 2ND Edition.

CLASSROOM TEACHER'S EMERGENCY LESSON PLANS
John Philips
jjohnny@csolve.net
ISBN 0-9686403-0-3

These emergency lesson plans come from John Philips new book "Jivin Johnny's Classroom Teacher's Emergency Lesson Plans for elementary and high schools."  The book contains over 90 student centered lessons and projects to help you survive--while your students learn!

OBSERVATION
TEACHER: Before the students enter, make 10 small or significant changes
in the classroom.  You may, for example, remove a very prominent poster,
leave an umbrella on the tray of the chalkboard, put 6 large books under
the garbage can, cover the room number on the door with a clown's face
and the greeting 'Hi!'
How observant are you?
10 changes have occurred in this room.
How many can you see?
Here are some other questions to test your memory and powers of
observation:
For the class you just left--
1.  Describe what the teacher was wearing.
2.  What was the lesson about? (Answer in one sentence.)
3.  What other class activities took place?
4.  What assignments were you given?
5.  When are those assignments due?
6.  What was written on the front board?  the side board?
7.  Were the blinds open or closed?
8.  Were the lights on or off?
9.   Were there any outside interruptions (for example, telelphone ringing,
P.A. announcements, people coming to the door)?
10.  How many other students in that class share your first name?
your hair color?

When you've answered these questions as best you can, get together with
someone who attended the same class and compare answers.  Give
yourself 1 mark for every correct observation.
