June 2001 Newsletter

A FREE newsletter edited by teacher, speaker and author Marjan Glavac.   http://www.thebusyeducator.com/

Queen's Birthday (New Zealand) June 4
Queen's Birthday (Australia, all except WA) June 11
Flag Day June 14
Father's Day June 17
Summer Begins June 21
St. Jean Baptiste Day (Canada-Quebec)

June is the last month of school for most of us here in Ontario and Canada.
I told my grade 5 students at the beginning of the year in September to blink their eyes.  That's how fast the year will go, I told them.  On June 1, I reminded them about blinking their eyes.  They all agreed, that's how fast the year has gone.  In the next few weeks, we'll be finishing up report cards, digging up those time capsules that we did in September, moving rooms, schools, changing grades, and looking forward to summer. For all my colleagues in education, I wish you a safe, wonderful and enjoyable summer.

SIGHTING THE FIRST SENSE - SEEING IS BELIEVING
http://library.thinkquest.org/C001464/
Sighting the First Sense - Seeing is Believing offers a breadth of educational tools and resources regarding sight and visual perception. The site is divided into several sections highlighting many aspects of this topic - from how we perceive sight to the art of perception and how it works. In addition to original text and illustrations, visitors also have the opportunity to engage in visual demonstrations and interact with other users, thereby taking full advantage of the "Internet style of learning." All in all, this website is a prime source for information related to sight and visual perception. Done through collaboration and maintained by three teengers spanning the globe (and totally different time zones) for the International
ThinkQuest competition.

BUTTERFLIES 2000 ON THE WINGS OF FREEDOM
http://library.thinkquest.org/C002251
The website "Butterflies 2000 - on the wings of freedom" offers broad, detailed information about butterflies and moths. A high speed shooting and scanning electron microscope pictures give extraordinary scientific information. Many articles describe the various relationships between butterflies and humans such as endangerment, conservation, butterfly gardening, bionics and where we find butterflies in legends, myths, arts, literature and names. Two other chapters give advice how to keep butterflies (not only at school) and show the amazing side of the world of butterflies.

An extra chapter for children includes a trick film about metamorphosis,
games, a quiz and other butterfly related activities. Simple articles let
them dive into the fascinating world of butterflies. Additionally there is the possibility to publish self-written butterfly poems and stories in the website. The growing "resources" link points to where to find further information.

COPERNIC.COM
http://copernic.com
Long time supporter and subscriber to The Busy Educator's Newsletter,
Earl Moniz sends in this description of a meta-search engine he really
likes:

Copernic.com has a free download meta-search engine available for PCs and Macs. Benefits over other meta-search engines?  Lots...

1 - it resides on the user's computer along with the results - so there isn't a need to redo a search at a later time; the results are there until deleted;

2 - duplicate and dead links are eliminated; no more frustrating results with those Error 404 messages!;

3 - it uses about 10 or 12 search engines at once and customizes the number and types of engines used by the search the user is conducting - so, Copernic selects the search engines that should return the most reliable and relevant number of hits according to the terms used in the search!;

4 - the program updates itself and all its search engine programs before doing a search - the user is always using the latest version of the search engines involved!

5 - the results are automatically sorted by relevancy;

6 - it is free!

The web site www.copernic.com indicates that there are 7 million copies in use all over the world ... I believe them! ... it is a wonderful tool that drastically cuts the time that users spend scanning results, chasing irrelevant sites, and following dead ends!

Thank you Earl!

2001: DESTINATION SPACE
http://www.thetech.org/2001ds/
Behind all good science fiction is real science fact. By presenting a realistic picture of the future, science fiction inspires those who are creating the real future.  A new online exhibition, developed by The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, California, USA, explores this premise through streaming video, discussion forums, interactive presentations and an online art gallery. The online exhibition, 2001: Destination Space, is an extension of the physical installation of 2001: Destination Space at The Tech Museum's San Jose facility.

Site Features Include
2001: Fiction and Fact
How accurate was the filmmaker's vision of the future? This Macromedia Flash presentation compares the fictional technologies seen in 2001: A Space Odyssey with their factual counterparts today. When visitors click on objects representing the technologies seen in the movie, such as videophones, a space station, or computers that read lips, they will be able to see which technologies existed for real in 1968, which are possible only now, and which are still in our future. The results can be surprising.
