Subject: Call for participation
Dear Colleagues,
The National Science Foundation is evaluating a new high school biology program currently under development by Pearson Education.  This program is called Biology: Exploring Life. The central component of Biology: Exploring Life is an extensive World Wide Web site that will provide an interactive learning environment for all students, and a source of daily support and collaboration for teachers. The Web component will be fully integrated with a short, concept-oriented textbook and a collection of inquiry-based lab and field activities.
The main goal of the NSF study is to provide an ongoing evaluation by teachers and students during the development of this biology curriculum.  Biology: Exploring Life is designed to improve high school biology students' nderstanding of fundamental biological concepts, to improve their selfconfidence and skill in scientific reasoning and inquiry; and enhance their ability to apply biological knowledge and the methods of science to important social issues, consistent with the National Science Education Standards.

We are seeking high school biology teachers who teach general 9th or 10th grade biology and are interested in pilot testing Exploring Life materials in their classroom during the 2001-02 school year. Two summer evaluation workshops will be conducted to introduce pilot testers to curricular materials and to conduct focus groups on the effectiveness of the curricular materials.  Interested participants must be willing to review materials prior to the workshop.  One workshop will be held June 24 at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers during the National Educational Computing Conference in Chicago.  The second
workshop will be held July 10-12 at Lehigh University. Participants must be willing to pilot test cellular respiration, photosynthesis, and biosphere chapters in their classroom during the upcoming school year.  Participants must be willing to have
a member of the evaluation team observe their students using the Exploring Life materials in their classrooms.

Honoraria will be provided for attending the workshop and pilot testing classroom materials during the 2001-02 school years. Supplemental honoraria will be provided for reviewing additional curricular materials in developmental stages.
Participants' students will require access to networked computers with the following minimum hardware and software requirements:

64 MB of RAM
Web browser: Internet Explorer 5 or higher
350 MHz CPU speed
56K connection, preferably higher
Flash 5 and QuickTime 4 plug-ins must be installed on the Web-browser
If you are not sure that your computers meet these requirements,
please view our test page at
http://www.lehigh.edu/~inexlife/browsertest.html.

If you are interested in participating in an evaluation workshop, please complete the requested information online at: http://www.lehigh.edu/~inexlife/call.html
