"INTEGRATION A REWARDING EXPERIENCE"

Fellow Busy Educator Newsletter subscriber Dave Melanson has written a
manual titled: "Integration A Rewarding Experience." The book deals with the
many obstacles and challenges faced by visually impaired and blind students.

The author, Dave Melanson has an eye condition called Retroentalfibroplazia
which he developed as a result of premature birth and has left him with
just under 10% vision in his left eye and totally blind in the right eye. He  gives
workshops and inservice training to elementary teachers on the topic of the
challenges faced by visually impaired and blind students at teachers' conventions
in the US and in Canada as well as on Professional Educational Development
Days for teachers at local schools in the Montreal Quebec area. He also gives
monthly sessions on Teachers Net as well as writing  monthly for the Teachers
Net Gazette which can be accessed by going to http://www.teachers.net.

In his manual, Melanson talks about how to overcome challenges and gives
solutions to help ensure that the visually impaired or blind student is able to
succeed and grow in a positive constructive way. The challenge of ensuring that
the other students in a classroom respect and treat the sight impaired student in an inclusive and positive manner is also discussed.

THE NORTHWOOD JAG PROGRAM

The Northwood JAG Program website illustrates that technology can be
successfully integrated throughout the curriculum.  The JAG was designed by
Katherine Nell McNeil, M.Ed. as a way to facilitate academic and behavioural
success to students referred to her program.  This site serves 7, 8, and 9th grade
students who have been classified as special education students with behavior
disorders.  Information would be of interest to parents and educators interested
in using a technology rich environment to change behaviors and move students

purpose is to help families keep in touch with what their fourth graders are doing

and social studies.  There is also a bulletin board page with reminders of

This site is an interactive companion to the Middlesex Institute of Technology
program, an 8th grade physical science course. It contains a monthly calendar of
upcoming events. Each month there is also Mr. G. Review game which tests
students' understanding of present topics. There is also a "Mystery Molecule"
and Science-Sports Game. Weekly, students can try an extra credit challenge or
get help with the tutorial page. Parents can find information ranging from grading
procedures & conference schedule to how our course addresses the NJ Core
State Standards. There is also an on-line mini course teaching research skills
using the Internet.

How To Love Your Dog...A Kid's Guide to Dog Care is for teachers to use in
their classrooms with pet lessons and core literature pieces (Shiloh, Where the
Red Fern Grows, Stone Fox, etc). You are welcome to visit and use any of the
material in your classroom. The website is appropriate for grades 2 and up.

Your students can also send book reports to 'How to Love Your Dog' for online
publishing and join dozens of pages of stories and poetry submitted by students
all over the world. There is a list of Internet resources for teachers as well.
Reading skills are also emphasized on the riddle page, the scavenger hunt, and
the quizzes which test comprehension of website material. There is also an
