Last weekend my family had the great privilege to host two students from the
Young Americans song and dance troupe from southern California USA. They
were wonderful ambassadors for their teachers, parents and country. Their
devotion, dedication and long days of practice to their craft really came
through in their fun filled song and dance show on Saturday night.
Congratulations Young Americans! If you have a student or child that would
benefit from inspiring drama, dance and song, check out their website at: http://www.youngamericans.org/home.html
I’ve finally had the chance to catch up on my backlog of book and software
reviews. Over the next few days, I will be sending out a special review
supplement of the Busy Educator’s Newsletter.

Math and Science Teaching Successes in Urban Classrooms Featured in ENC Focus
(Columbus, Ohio). Math and science teaching can be every bit as successful in
urban classrooms as in other settings according to the practicing educators
writing in the October 2002 issue of ENC Focus. The will to “teach all
children well,” voiced in an interview with Kay Toliver, veteran East Harlem
teacher, is the key to the magazine's theme, Success in the Urban Classroom.
Ruby Payne, a former teacher now recognized as an authority on poverty's
effect on schooling, discusses the hidden, middle-class rules of school that
hinder communication between teachers and the children of generational
poverty. Other articles detail urban teachers' work in their classrooms, from
math lessons to science projects to parent groups. Partnerships with nonprofit
agencies and higher education are the subject of several articles.
The free quarterly magazine, produced by the Eisenhower National
Clearinghouse in Columbus, Ohio, is mailed to more than 120,000 print
subscribers. The full content appears online at:

Head west with Lewis & Clark in this interactive role-playing game. As you
journey westward, you can stop along the way and explore, collecting plants and
animals and trading with Indians for cultural objects. What you collect and send
back to Thomas Jefferson will shape his view of these new lands. (This is a demo
version of this game, allowing you to travel upriver to the first stop. The complete
game is part of Colonial Williamsburg's Electronic Field Trip program.)

MARINE RESERVES: HOW DO YOU FIT IN?
A DIGITAL LAB FROM JASON XIV: FROM SHORE TO SEA
http://www.jason.org/digital_labs/CINMS/
The Channels Islands off the California coast are rich in ecological diversity.
They also play an important role in the local economy, since they support
commercial and recreational fishing and diving industries. This digital lab lets
you join a group working to establish new marine reserves in the Channel Islands.
Creating a marine reserve that will sustain the natural ecology of the Channel
Islands without hurting the human community is not easy. It's like solving a puzzle
but so far, no one has figured out a solution that everyone can accept. Are you up
for the challenge?
This digital lab is part of the JASON Project's latest expedition, JASON
XIV: From Shore to Sea. JASON has made this digital lab freely accessible
for the 2002-03 school year. Subscribe to JASON for access to so much more:
the award-winning curriculum, videos and gated online community, plus the
live two-week Expedition Broadcast. Learn more about JASON XIV:
