BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Here in London Ontario Canada, Mayor Anne Marie DeCicco will kick off February
as Black History Month by unveiling a plaque renaming Nelson Park the Richard Berry Harrison Park http://londonblackhistory.tripod.com/rbharrison.html
A London native, Richard B. Harrison was a broadway actor in the 1930s, playing
"de Lawd" in 1,657 performances of The Green Pastures.
Southwestern Ontario Canada where I’m writing from was the end point for the
Underground Railroad. Just up the highway from me is Uncle Tom’s Cabin
Historic Site located in Dresden, Ontario. The site commemorates the life of
Reverend Josiah Henson and his contributions to the Underground Railroad. It
was Henson's life experiences that inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe’s creation
of the character Uncle Tom in her book Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
Harriet Tubman, the legendary conductor on the Underground Railroad spent
eight years in St. Catharines Ontario, just outside Niagara Falls. For more information on local events here in London Ontario to celebrate Black
History Month and in the nearby region, check out the following websites:

FRENCH AND SPANISH SECOND LANGUAGE CDS
http://www.educorock.com
Having taught French as a second language in elementary school for the past 20
years, there are a number of favorite tools I have in my teacher’s toolkit to
motivate reluctant students to learn French. Music is one of my best tools. And my
favorite French singer and songwriter is French teacher Steven Langlois, known by
his stage name Etienne. What School House Rocks did for the teaching of English
grammar…., Etienne is doing the same for the teaching of French and Spanish basic
alphabet, numbers and vocabulary to grammatical usage of pronouns, adjectives
and verbs. Here is a summary of two of his CDs.
La danse des araignees CD contains 10 songs, each played in a different style of
music ranging from rock, hip-hop to reggae. Grammatical concepts covered here
are regular –RE verbs, possessive adjectives, les pronoms, avoir, les mois, les
sports and more. Highly infectious music designed to motivate even those tough
to reach students.
Etienne, c’est le temps, Langlois’ latest CD features 12 songs, with each again
played in a different style featuring songs that range from hip-hop, techno,
alternative rock, to rap and reggae. Grammatical concepts covered are le future,
l’imparfait et le conditionnel, l’imperative, les verbes pronominaux, Dr. & Mrs.
Vandertramp, vouloir et pouvoir, les numeros and more. A great CD to teach
these sometimes hard to teach grammatical concepts.
For more information on Etienne, other CD’s, teacher materials and concert tours
in the USA and Canada, go to his website at: http://www.educorock.com

CARLA BEARD WEB ENGLISH TEACHER
http://webenglishteacher.com
Carla Beard, editor of Web English Teacher, passed this along:
Are you The Weakest Link? (Brain teasers with attitude.)
Below are 4 questions. Answer them instantly. You can't take your
time. Answer them immediately. No pencil or paper! OK? Let's find
out just how smart and clever you really are. Ready? ... GO!!!
First Question: You are participating in a race. You overtake the
second person. What position are you in?
Answer: If you answer that you are first, then you are absolutely
wrong! If you overtake the second person and you take his place,
you are second!
Try not to mess up in the next question.
To answer the second question, don't take as much time as you took
for the first question. (You know you took too much time.)
Second Question: If you overtake the last person, then you are...?
Answer: If you answered that you are second to last, then you are
wrong again. Tell me, how can you overtake the LAST person?!
Third Question: Very tricky math! Note: This must be done in your
head only. Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator. Try it.
Take 1000 and add 40 to it.
Now add another 1000.
Now add 30.
Add another 1000.
Now add 20.
Now add another 1000.
Now add 10.
What is the total?
Answer: Did you get 5000? The correct answer is actually 4100.
Don't believe it? Check with your calculator!
Today is definitely not your day. Maybe you will get the last
question right.
Last Question: Mary's father has five daughters: Nana, Nene,
Nini, Nono. What is the name of the fifth daughter?
Answer: Nunu? Nana? Nene? NONO! Of course not. The fifth daughter's
name is Mary. Read the question again.
