BOOK AND E-BOOK REVIEWS
But Is it Art or Science: A Teacher's Guide to Investigating Properties of Materials Through Art
http://hop.clickbank.net/?busyeducat/tchrebks
Reviewed by: Shirley Myers B.A., B.Ed.
Gr. 2 Teacher
In the e-book But Is it Art or Science: A Teacher's Guide to Investigating Properties of Materials Through Art, the teacher is presented with seven
easy to follow and concise investigations focusing on the properties of materials
with an emphasis on art concepts. The consistent organization of the activities,
followed by the ever-helpful “FYI” for teacher background, allows teachers to
meet a wide range of cross-curricular expectations. Hands on, cooperative
experiences allow students to independently explore concepts. Extension ideas
in the “Let’s Go Further” section of each activity will easily motivate even the
most inquisitive young scientists. Teachers will be thrilled to be able to address
art expectations in this exploratory mode.

The Student Power Memory System
by David Frey MBA, B.A

Reviewed by: Meghan Sim, Hon. BA (Psych), B.Ed.
I came across the Student Power Memory System when one of my colleagues
was using the system with his class. I just had to find out more because I
like what I saw! I saw students excited about learning and about their
new found powers. Since my undergraduate degree is in psychology, I know the
amazing powers and the fallibility of the human brain. This method helps
students to train their brain to remember what they need to know. I particularly
liked that students find these mnemonics to be fun and easy to use, and
yet they are grounded in solid brain research. I also appreciated the
abundance of examples to illustrate the various techniques. This system takes the
learner from beginner to practitioner quickly and easily. I can't wait to
start out my September by teaching the Student Power Memory System.

TRADING AROUND THE WORLD
http://www.imf.org/external/np/exr/center/students/trade/index.htm
International trade touches us all. We drink soda from cans made of aluminum
mined in Australia, eat fruit from South America, and wear clothes made from
African cotton. We take it for granted, yet before we can enjoy these products
and materials, traders must negotiate prices and deliver the goods through a
network of relationships that literally spans the globe.
Play this game to experience the challenges and excitement of international trade.
See if you can get the best price for the goods you sell and the biggest bargains
for the goods you buy. Watch how the global economy is doing: the prices
you'll be able to get and the deals you can make depend on how healthy the
global economy is. (Grades 6-12)

WHERE IN THE WORLD AND WHAT IN THE WORLD IS MONEY?
http://www.imf.org/external/np/exr/center/students/money/index.htm
So you think you know what money is? What if money isn't a coin or a banknote
or even a credit card? They may be common now. But not everyone in the world
has used these forms of money for very long at all. Throughout history and
around the globe, many different things have served as money. This game takes
you on a time-travel journey to many times and places in history. At each stop,
*you* have to figure out what counts as money in order to get home! (Grades 4-7)
