RAPPING PAPER, MYTHIC THUNDERMUGS
SURVIVAL WEAPONS
By Al Beck
Reviewed by Marjan Glavac editor, The Busy Educator’s Newsletter
After one of THOSE weeks teaching school, I read both of Al Beck’s books
RAPPING PAPER, MYTHIC THUNDERMUGS and SURVIVAL WEAPONS
in the park on a sunny and warm day amid the laughter of children, romantic
couples and other quiet readers at picnic tables.
Beck gives a great overview of the highs and lows of teaching and the institution
of education with all its flaws and how to overcome them. There are profound
thoughts simply told for those new and old to education.
The poems, stories, songs and illustrations leap out at you and hold you,
making you reflect on your own life. These two very enjoyable books will
lift you up from the depths of a bad day and make you take notice of things
you have taken for granted as a teacher, as a parent, as a friend.
-----------
Beck has been an educator for more than 40 years, having taught on the primary,
secondary and college levels in visual arts and interdisciplinary programs. He is
Professor of Art Emeritus at Culver-Stockton College, where he was associate
professor of art and head of the art department from 1968 through 1996. He also
served as a part-time instructor at John Wood Community College Library from
1978 through 1999, teaching art, photography and interdisciplinary classes.
Anyone wishing to purchase a copy of either or both works may contact Al Beck

Elementary Teacher, Vice Principal and Parent
The First 102 Best “Reflective Quickies” for Teachers is targeted at
professional educators but, anyone who finds themselves in the role of teacher,
coach or parent will appreciate the reflective experience provided by this work.
Teachers and administrators will value this eBook as excellent professional
development with a broad mix of reflective practice and prescriptive advice. It
serves as a solid list of practical ideas and tips for new and experienced teachers
alike. It allows the reader to celebrate what is already a part of their personal
and professional existence while gently reminding and encouraging us all to
focus and reflect upon our work in order to maximize the potential of all those
that we influence.
With only the first 102 quickies printed in this book, this initial investment
will have educators looking back often for more snippets of experience and
knowledge that may be available in any sequel.
An invaluable resource for school leaders as they attempt to provide staff with
meaningful yet realistic, and short and to the point, professional development
opportunities.

THE TREE: A GRAPHIC ORGANIZER FOR EXPOSITORY PARAGRAPHS
AND SUMMARIES
http://www.polk.edu/instruct/alss/kathy_r/tree
Kathleen Riley of Polk Community College Winter Haven, FL USA has designed
a multicolor diagram to show students--mainstream, ESE or ESL, on elementary
through college levels—how to organize coherent, well-developed papers and
summaries. Her system also applies to reading expository passages; it visually
represents the relationship among main idea, details and conclusion. Access the
website for handouts filled with explicit instruction in easy-to-understand language.
Teachers who use the TREE report higher pass rates on writing tests, greater
satisfaction with the quality of their students' writing and more freedom to
focus on the content of a paper.
