UNDERGROUND RAILROAD TOURS (PARENTS,TEACHERS, GR. 5-UNIVERISTY)
March 25, 2007 marked 200 years to the day of the 1807 Abolition of the Slave Trade Act. This Act outlawed the slave trade throughout the British Empire and made it illegal for British ships to be involved in the trade, marking the beginning of the end for the transatlantic traffic in human beings
On this exact day, my wife Maria and I took a customized Black History tour of the Niagara area in Ontario Canada from www.NIAGARABOUNDTOURS.com owner Lezlie Wells a fifth generation Canadian
descendant of a fugitive slave from Kentucky
In Fort Erie Ontario, across the Niagara River from Buffalo New York, we were shown the Crossing Point where slaves were taken by steamer, rowboat or by swimmingto their freedom on the Canadian side. Just down the street, we visited Berie Hall, a safe house for fleeing slaves. In St. Catharines, we toured the Salem Chapel, British Methodist Episcopal Church where Harriet Tubman worshipped and guided many slaves to freedom. The chapel houses the Harriet Tubman Centre for Cultural Services.
For a customized Black History tour of the Niagara area, and to find out what happened to individuals on their freedom journey, the church Harriet Tubman attended and more check out Lezlie’s site:
