Atomic Energy of Canada Limited Kids’ Zone
http://www.aecl.ca/kidszone/atomicenergy/index.asp

The Atomic Energy of Canada Limited Kids’ Zone offers teachers and students timely information on nuclear energy, electricity and how energy interacts with our environment.  Information is presented in seven topics: Games Room, Sound Off, What Is Energy, Electric Avenue, Tools, Mother Earth Knows Best, and Nuclear World in English and French.

Throughout the site, games are available which tie into and reinforce the material being presented.  On the Games Room page, all the games are organized in one spot.  Clicking on any one of the games (concentration, slide puzzle and word search) takes you back to the original places on the website where they are found.

The Sound Off page gives students an opportunity to ask questions, share stories or find others to share ideas about energy, electricity or the environment.

The other five pages emphasize content.  The content is presented in visually appealing colours for students and the layout, cartoons and animated charts will hold students’ interest.  You can’t help but want to read more about each topic.

Each Did U Know Section contains facts that are written with basic examples that any student (and teacher) can understand.  For example:

Nuclear power keeps Canada cool! Since 1971, reactors in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick have saved Canada's atmosphere from over 1 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, which can contribute to global warming. If you're not flabbergasted yet, just imagine WWF's The Rock, who weighs 125 kg (that’s heavy). If a tonne is 1000 kg, then 1 billion tonnes is equivalent to the weight of 8 billion times the weight of The Rock! That's heavy with a capital H!”

Although this site promotes the use of atomic energy, other sources of electricity from water, natural gas and coal are also presented.

In the continuing debate on how to protect our environment, this is a site which gives students and teachers another point of view.
