Canadian Geographic Kids

Imagine visiting Canada, the second largest country in the world, without having to leave your school.  Through games and contests, video clips, fun facts, maps and an interactive atlas, Canadian Geographic Kids delivers a field trip that teachers and students will enjoy and remember.

The opening page of Canadian Geographic Kids opens up with an Animal of the Month, Fun Facts, Joke of the Day and an Interactive Contest, Site Survey and a Store.  A menu of other choices can be found on the left hand side.

Joke of the DayClick on the Games & Contests link and check out the Map of Canada Puzzle.  It’s a great way to have students learn about the provinces and territories of Canada.  Students click and move puzzle pieces of Canada until they match up.  The program will automatically click them together if they are correct. Once they’re done, have them take the extension activity and match up the flags to the provinces and territories.  There are other contest, games and fun quizzes to try out here as well.

A really cool feature can be found under the Maps link.  Here you can find 3 categories of maps: Canadian Geographic, Interactive World Maps and Cool Online Maps. The History of Canada in a Flash really is a cool online map.  Here you can see the map of Canada transform before your very eyes from 1700 to 1999. By clicking on each of the period dates, the historical map for that time period literally flashes before you. Here history and geography really come alive.

Illustrations contestThe Canadian Geographic Kids Atlas is another very motivating section.  Interactive activities, animated characters, audio and video make this a good section to explore.

This site will not only teach students about Canada, but their teacher won’t have to organize a trip outside their school!
