Stay Alert/Stay Safe (SASS)
http://www.sass.ca/
Stay Alert/Stay Safe (SASS) is a streetproofing program geared to children 7-10 years old. The Stay Alert...Stay Safe mission is to develop an on-going, national streetproofing program actively involving both children and adults, that aims to make them aware of and alert to potential dangers, by building situation understanding and, more importantly, children's confidence in handling such situations.
Since SASS' founding in 1987, the organization has grown to a national program with materials available in French and English. The SASS website, founded in October 1996, has had over one million visitors.
Resources for streetproofing children are available for teachers, parents, police, community leaders, youth leaders and kids.
For teachers, resources include a seven chapter, 60 page teacher's guide of creative classroom activity ideas that teach children to stay alert and stay safe; a set of photocopy ready activity cards with 30 activities for the classroom or home; activity pages filled with puzzles and word games; an 6 minute animated video; a SASS booklet with 16 coloured pages; a downloadable computer game in French and English and pamphlets on bullying and streetproofing for babysitters.
The Just For Kids section of the site is very impressive. Any student would enjoy the activities and links here. There are four links here: Clubhouse, Games, Booklet and Scavenger Hunt. The Clubhouse link includes Cool Links, Random Tips, Netiquette, Internet Safety, Smileys, Net Speak, Surfing Tips and Contests.
Under the Games link, there are easy to use interactive games that reinforce making safe choices for children. Games here include going on a bus trip, finding 10 places where kids have put themselves in danger, making your own story, a slider game, a memory game, an interactive crossword puzzle and more.
The Booklet link connects students to a 16 page booklet that reinforces streetproofing tips through rules, safety tips, quizzes and real life situations.
The Scavenger Hunt link tests students on their knowledge of the SASS site through 10 interactive multiple choice questions.
This site would easily fit into any teacher's curriculum on teaching students how to keep safe.
